Counselling/therapy is billed according to the Psychologists' Association of Alberta Fee Schedule. The fee is $220 per 50 minute therapy session for individual counselling or couples counselling. The first session of couples counselling involves an assessment of your overall relationship, which takes 80 minutes. This session is $330.
The typical frequency of individual and couples counselling sessions is once per week. Payment is due at the end of each session by cash, cheque or e-transfer.
Is the Cost of Counselling Covered?
The services of a Registered Psychologist are covered by many, but not all, health insurance and employee benefit plans. Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, many insurance and benefit providers are also covering virtual sessions with a psychologist, and are likely to continue covering virtual services in the future.
You can submit receipts to your insurance or benefit plan for full or partial reimbursement if you have coverage for psychologist visits, counselling or mental health therapy. Check with your insurer or benefit plan provider about your coverage rate and whether virtual sessions are covered before booking your first appointment.
Did you know that the Canada Revenue Agency considers individual counselling and therapy sessions with a Registered Psychologist as tax-deductible medical expenses? This is because Psychologists are regulated health care professionals. Be sure to keep your receipts for any out-of-pocket expenses for your session fees, so you can benefit from this credit at tax time.
How Do I Book an Appointment?
I offer new clients a free 15 minute phone consultation. This gives you an opportunity to speak to me and ask me any questions you have before proceeding to book a counselling appointment. The consultation also gives me a chance to learn about your unique needs. I can schedule an appointment for you at the end of our call.
* Registered Psychologists in Alberta are licensed to provide in-person or virtual counselling services for people residing in the Province of Alberta. They cannot provide consultations, counselling or therapy for individuals or couples living in other parts of Canada or overseas.
